Protection measures

The staff of the Crane Information Centre coordinates different conservation projects nationwide, e.g.:

  • Restoration of drained breeding sites

  • Consulting service for public authorities concerning interventions into the landscape

  • “Distraction” feedings to avoid damage in agricultural areas at resting sites

  • Set up and maintenance of information panels at resting sites

  • Guidance of visitors to specific observation spots and platforms at resting sites

  • Organisation and realization of a annually crane congress

 
   

 
Scientific work
  • Monitoring of cranes (data on the development of the population and distribution of the breeding sites in Germany)

  • Collecting data of resting in Germany during autumn and spring

  • Marking single birds with rings and radio tags for gaining information about the breeding biology and the migrating patterns

  • Research about the influence of disturbances, the food selection and the use of habitat

  • Setup and maintenance of a specialised library
