The staff of the Crane Information Centre coordinates different conservation projects nationwide, e.g.:

• Restoration of drained breeding sites

• Consulting service for public authorities concerning interventions into the landscape

• “Distraction” feedings to avoid damage in agricultural areas at resting sites

• Set up and maintenance of information panels at resting sites

• Guidance of visitors to specific observation spots and platforms at resting sites

• Organisation and realization of a annually crane congress

• Monitoring of cranes (data on the development of the population and distribution of the breeding sites in Germany)

• Collecting data of resting in Germany during autumn and spring

• Marking single birds with rings and radio tags for gaining information about the breeding biology and the migrating patterns

• Research about the influence of disturbances, the food selection and the use of habitat

• Setup and maintenance of a specialised library

• Cooperation with all European crane protection groups under the guidance of the European Crane Working Group

• Exchange of information and cooperation with other crane centres in Sweden (Hornborga Naturum at Hornborga Lake near Falköping), France (Ferme aux Grues at Lac du Der Chantecoq near St. Dizier) and in USA (International Crane Foundation in Baraboo, Wisconsin)

• Cooperation with other organisations (Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux - France, Asociación para la Defensa de la Naturaleza y los Recursos de Extremadura (ADENEX) and Coordinadora Extremeña Protección Ambiental (C.E.P.A.) – Spain, EURONATUR etc.)
