| The permanent exhibition is open all year round, in December and January only with advanced reservation. Audio-visual presentations like a special crane film and informative posters, give a good insight into the life of the Eurasian Crane.
The exhibition shows also different preparated birds and vertebrates of the cranes' world. The entrance to our exposition is free. We inform you about the current number of resting cranes as well as the closest and best spots to observe these impressive birds. The coastal waters of the national park “Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft” attract a lot of migrating birds due to the peaceful sleeping sites and the diversity of habitats that can be found in this region.
Every year, thousands of cranes rest here in spring (on their way to Northern and Eastern Europe) and in autumn. The so-called “Ruegen-Bock-Region” (named after the main sleeping sites) is one of the biggest resting sites for cranes in Central Europe. Maximum resting numbers of 70.000 cranes are reached in autumn when you can observe the birds over a long period of time.
They take a rest for a few weeks before they fly to their overwintering sites in the south-west of Spain, Portugal and north-western Africa. During the day, they search for food on harvested crop and maize fields, in the evening they fly back to their sleeping sites in the shallow waters of the “Bodden”. In this unique area you find the Crane Information Centre in Groß Mohrdorf, 14 km in the north-west of Stralsund which was found in September 1996 by “Kranichschutz Deutschland”.
“Kranichschutz Deutschland” (Crane Conservation Germany) is an association of NABU (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union) and WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) Germany and is supported by Lufthansa´s environmental sponsoring programme. You can contribute to the peaceful and undisturbed resting period of the cranes with your considerate behaviour. For instance, it's better to stay in the car while watching cranes as the flight distance to vehicles is smaller than the one to humans. If you are lucky, the birds approach you to a distance of under a hundred meters. In our centre, you have the possibility to purchase different information sheets, flyers and books as well as scientific literature, DVDs and other gifts. You can join also special events and guided tours. |
