Photographing from hides

To meet the increasing interest in taking pictures of cranes, we provide three hides at an “distraction“ feeding area near the village Günz in the Rügen-Bock region, 4 km west of the Crane Information Centre.

Time period: 15th to 31st of March
1st to 31st of October

hide at Günzer See
From the hides you can take wonderful photos from the cranes on a meadow with
a lake in the background or you can take photos from the cranes on a maize stubble field.

The hides (bigger than the ones at Hornboga Lake) are placed on grassland and/or at the edge of a maize stubble field. In the background, you can see the reed of the Günzer Lake.

With the help of rangers we try to avoid any disturbances so that a high number of cranes can be observed most of the times. Of course, we cannot give a guarantee.

Booking the hides

The hides can be used by one or two persons (1 person: donation of 50 €, 2 persons: donation of 70 € per day). A reservation in advance is required and binding, please contact the Crane Information Centre.

Please visit the Crane Information Centre in the evening before you are going to use the hide to take care of the formalities. You will be provided with a bucket of maize to make specific spots in front of your hide more attractive for cranes.

Rules for behaviour

What to consider when using a photo hideout?

  1. The utilization of the photo hideout takes place at the user’s own risk.

  2. The photo hideout should be entered in the morning before sun rise and must not be left until the cranes have returned to their roosts, which usually lasts until sun set. To step outside the photo hideout during the day requires the explicit approval of the Crane Information Centre – please therefore give us a call: 0049-38323-80540.

  3. Please avoid showing yourself too close to the open window, because your skin will reflect light. Do not stick out parts of your body, clothes, other utensils or lenses beyond 5 cm from the window frame. Always remember to move slowly.

  4. Photoequipment outside of the photohideout is striktely forbidden (e.g. camouflaged photocamera with remote trigger set)

  5. Please open only one window at a time, to avoid alarming the cranes. Should you wish to take pictures from another window, make sure to close the open window first, before opening another one. Please move carefully and avoid jerky opening and closing movements of the windows.

  6. You are not allowed to operate noisy sound carriers and avoid loud conversations. Please avoid any noise such as chair replacement, clattering due to falling items, coughing and sneezing, etc.

  7. For your own safety, it is prohibited to use any sources of heat or to start a fire.

  8. Please use the bucket provided to answer nature’s call or bring along an urine bottle. The disposal should be performed by yourself when leaving the photo hideout (see number 1).

  9. Please take care of slippery surfaces in the shack.

  10. Please leave the photo hideout in a good condition, take the disposal with you and sweep out the floor of the photo hide with the broom provided. Close window and door and return the key to the Crane Information Centre until 12 o’clock the next morning.

  11. Incidents of damage of the photo hideout must be reported to us immediately upon return of the key, thus subsequent users will find the shack in good working order.

  12. In the case of malicious and wilful damage to the photo photo hideout the user shall bear the costs for the recovery of the original condition.

In case of verifiable nonobservance of the rules mentioned above we charge a fee of 300,-€. With signing the contract the hirer of the photo hideout agrees to the regulation. Aditionally, each photographer, that causes disturbances of cranes by violating the conditions mentioned above, will be permanently excluded from using the photo hideouts. The same applies for hirer, who cause damage to the shacks.
