A swedish summer for „Lettlandi”
After the juvenile crane “Lettlandi” was colourmarked and tagged with a GPS transmitter in Latvia 2019, it spent its first summer without parents (2020) in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. This year, for some reason he was drawn further north starting from the peninsula Fischland-Darß-Zingst. A non-stop flight of about 10 hours and 310 km later it reached the area of Värnamo, a region full of woods, bogs and lakes in southern Sweden. Later he also visited Mariannelund and the east coast between Västervik and Kalmar. One could say: a typical Sweden tourist!
Now it seems as if “Lettlandi” has found its favourite place: Since 16th June he stays around the lake Hulingen near Hultsfred most of the time. The movement pattern does not yet indicate a breeding attempt, but maybe “Lettlandi” chose this area as its future breeding site. Since the movement profile shows very few long distances, it is also possible that he moulted this summer.
