Departure mood in southern Sweden

While the first crane chicks have already hatched in Germany, thousands of cranes were still resting at the large resting places in southern Sweden until recently. In the last few days, however, the mood of departure has set in here as well (see photo).

According to our colleague Anders Hallengren from the Pulken-Yngsjö nature reserve near Kristianstad, this year's diversionary feeding has been stopped there, as the cranes have left the fields around the observation tower. At Lake Hornborga in Västergötland, however, there are currently (18.04.) still 2520 cranes.

With spring-like sunny weather and favorable thermals, many cranes set off in the last few days to migrate further north to their breeding grounds in central and northern Sweden and Norway. Slowly, spring-like conditions should set in in these areas as well, so that the breeding can begin soon.
