Local cranes are gathering

Since the start of the month, cranes from the region have begun to gather in the stubble fields. The non-breeding birds arrived first. They have now been joined by the families. One young bird, marked blue-brown-blue / red-white-brown, which was ringed near Endingen in June, is easily recognisable.

Last weekend, the first synchronised count took place at all roosting sites. This revealed that at least 1,500 cranes are already present on the Vorpommern coast.

From the start of September, the first cranes from Scandinavia will arrive here via the Baltic Sea for a stopover. We will then begin the diversionary feeding programme at KRANORAMA and open our doors to crane-watchers in 11 days’ time, on 1 September.

If you spot cranes in the fields these days, the rule is: ‘Pull over as far to the right as possible and stay in your car.’ This is the only way to avoid obstructing the flow of traffic and disturbing the cranes whilst they are feeding.
