Sensation: a GPS-tagged crane is emigrating
Our crane „Blacky“, equipped with a GPS-GRSM transmitter, crossed the Baltic Sea to Sweden on 21st of March 2017 and since then is tagged in southernmost Sweden. Blacky is a male in his 5th year and therefore such a behavior is big surprise. From time to time, a few German cranes in their second or third year of life join flocks of Scandinavian cranes in spring and fly to Southern Sweden, where they sometimes spend the whole summer afterwards. Why a relatively old and well-experienced adult crane flew to Sweden remains unclear. Blacky, photographed at the picture as juvenile bird, was still not mated.
We are very curious, if and when Blacky will return to Germany.
