Thousand of dead cranes in Europe

Every hour, sad news reaches KRANICHWELTEN, the office of the non-profit organization Crane Conservation Germany, from all over Europe. For the first time in history, avian influenza (influenza A virus H5N1) has reached the cranes on the Western European migration route. Between 400,000 and 450,000 cranes travel here in the fall to migrate from their northern breeding grounds to their southern wintering grounds.

We are currently receiving reports of weakened and dead cranes from almost every known resting area on the long and arduous migration route between Germany and Spain. The number of dead birds is already in the thousands. Although healthy and sick birds obviously avoid each other, this is only the beginning of a mass die-off.

Support Crane Conservation Germany with a small donation. Our large network is currently trying to find dead birds in all parts of Germany and speed up their recovery by local veterinary offices. This is the only way to prevent the rapid spread of this disease.
